Our goal is to help you achieve a level of maximum function and joy in life by helping you manage your pain. We are often asked about the use of CBD for pain management and more and more of our patients are seeking out sources of topical or oral CBD products. CBD has been well studied and is indicated for the treatment of certain seizure disorders, but has not been proven to be effective for any other indication. However, there is ongoing research on the use of CBD to treat various painful conditions, insomnia, anxiety and other disorders. A recently presented scientific abstract indicates that it may be helpful in reducing or discontinuing the use of opioids. The related basic science and early clinical studies do show promise. We at Denver Back Pain Specialists (DBPS Research) are beginning efforts to become more involved in this research, as well.
CBD has the potential to cause drug interactions with medications that you may be taking. CBD can have negative effects on testosterone / sexual hormone levels, cause liver damage, and negative effects on the developing brain (FDA site: What You Need to Know (And What We’re Working to Find Out About Products Containing Cannabis or Cannabis-derived Compounds, Including CBD1). CBD can cause drowsiness, especially when combined with alcohol or sedating drugs such as opioids or sleep medications, mood disturbances, bowel dysfunction, and altered levels of alertness.
THC has no, or very limited, role in the management of pain and has risks, drug interactions and psychoactive effects that make it a poor choice for this purpose. Our practice policy is that we do not prescribe opioids or scheduled drugs in combination with THC. ClearView – Thrive2 is a company that produces CBD products and guarantees that their products contain only pure CBD, without any THC. Many of our patients are using CBD products but cannot find non THC-containing topicals, tinctures or oils. We have thus decided to partner with ClearView – Thrive to make these CBD – only products available to our patients.
