Musculoskeletal Disorders

The musculoskeletal system is made up of bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other tissues. It enables our bodies to move, and can also be a source of pain, degeneration, and injury. Your musculoskeletal system can be thought of in the following areas:

Shoulder Pain

Your shoulder is comprised of primarily three bones, including the humerus, shoulder blade, and clavicle. There are also several muscles involved in making up and stabilizing the joint. Sources of pain or injury include:

  • Dislocations
  • Strains and sprains
  • Bursitis
  • Tendonitis

Arthritis and nerve injury can also cause pain in the shoulder. Depending on the source of your pain, your provider will tailor your care program to your unique needs and goals.

Elbow Pain

Your elbow is also made of three bones, including the:

  • Humerus
  • Ulna
  • Radius

It has varied movement and has many muscles and tendons surrounding it to provide strength, stability, and flexibility. It can be a source of pain if you have a fracture, strain, tendonitis, or nerve injury.

Wrist & Hand Pain

The wrist is made of eight bones, while the hand is composed of the metacarpals and phalanges of the fingers. All of these bones are connected by tendons, ligaments, and muscles which can be sources of pain. Some injuries to the wrist and hand include:

Hip Pain

The hip is one of the most common areas to experience pain in the musculoskeletal system, and proper evaluation and diagnosis is important, as it can be a crossover area between hip issues vs. lumbar issues. Your hip is made of three bones:

Many muscles attach to these bones to allow for complex movement of the hip joint. Bursitis and tendonitis can cause hip pain, as well as fractures and osteoarthritis.

Knee Pain

Your knee is also a very common area to experience pain, and like the hip, proper diagnosis is crucial to ensuring the best treatment outcome, as it can sometimes cross over with nerve issues or pain from the low back. The knee is also made of three bones, including the femur, tibia, and fibula. Many muscles, tendons and ligaments connect to these bones, providing strength, flexibility, and movement support. Some of the most common pain conditions of the knee include:

  • Sprains, strains, and tears of the ACL, MCL or meniscus
  • Bursitis
  • Peroneal nerve compression

Ankle & Foot Pain

Foot and ankle pain is evaluated by the location of pain, including the forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot. Potential sources of pain include:

  • Fractures
  • Dislocations
  • Malformations
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome

Proper diagnosis is vital to the development of a comprehensive treatment plan and a complete recovery from your pain. The providers at the Denver Spine and Pain Institute will review your symptoms, perform an exam, and discuss a full spectrum of treatment options to help you get back to enjoying your life with less pain.

Tendinosis

Tendons are made of connective tissue and connect muscle to bone. Tendonitis and tendinosis are two common diagnoses of pain.

The heel, elbow, and foot are common sites of tendon issues. Treatment usually involves regenerative medicine therapies or Tenex procedure.
