Exercise Instruction

It is widely known that benefits of exercise include improvement of cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, and muscle strength. Lesser known is that exercise does not necessarily mean working up a sweat and lifting heavy weights, but rather that it helps to improve core strength, movement control, and range of motion. These factors make exercise instruction an important component of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for many spine and pain complaints.

Exercise instruction involves:

All of these elements are tailored to your specific pain source, lifestyle and goals. Your physical therapy team will work closely with you to help you progress safely and comfortably towards your goals.

Local Stabilizing Muscles

Foundation, or local muscles, are the smaller muscles that attach directly to the spine. Research has shown the importance of these local muscles as they contribute to the stability and function of the spine. Their primary roles include:

Local stabilizing muscles often stop working like they should in the presence of pain. It is therefore important and necessary to retrain these muscles to improve pain and reduce reoccurrence of pain. However, retraining these muscles can be challenging as it often requires learning how to get control of a muscle you never thought about using before.

Global Stabilizing Muscles

Global stabilizing retraining refers to learning how to control these larger muscles to protect your spine. Gaining control of these muscles often can help protect an injured disc, avoid pressure on an injured nerve or joint, and learning what activities often exacerbate your pain. Your physical therapy team at the Denver Spine and Pain Institute will use a variety of tools and experience to give you feedback to help you achieve good control of the global stabilizing muscles.
